Popoola Olasupo, a member of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, and another official were abducted by unidentified gunmen while they were traveling to their places of employment.
In the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, Olasupo was reportedly abducted at 6.30 am on Sunday near the Eledumare-Fidiwo axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The kidnapping was confirmed by a TRACE source who asked to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the situation.
Further information revealed that police officers and a few volunteers are currently pursuing the shooters.
The official was the only person taken hostage, according to the source, after the gunmen who had been hiding in the bushes opened fire on a commercial bus carrying him.
As of the time this article was filed, attempts to reach Babatunde Akinbiyi, the TRACE spokeswoman, for comment were fruitless.
Calls placed to Akinbiyi’s cellphone went unanswered, and a text message sent to him went unanswered.
However, when reached, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state police public relations officer, confirmed the event.
“Our anti-kidnapping squad is already after them. We are combing the forest and we know that they will all be arrested.
“Ogun State is not a ground for criminals to settle. It is either they leave or we smoke them out of this state,” Oyeyemi said.
