The former leader’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, denied on Thursday that he requested his successor not to look into a few ministers from the previous administration.
He added that Buhari had left Daura for London in order to receive the rest he required, which was being denied by the regular visits from well-wishers.
“If social media is to be believed, former President Muhammadu Buhari is requesting his successor, President Bola Tinubu not to investigate some former officials of his government…this is fake news, and nothing more,” Shehu said in a statement he signed on Thursday evening titled ‘What Buhari didn’t say to President Tinubu.’
According to a report on Tuesday from an online news source, Tinubu gave his predecessor the assurance that he and his close associates will not be targeted in any anti-corruption campaign his administration launches in the wake of the suspension of EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa.
“It is fake, let us not discuss it or give it energy or air of publicity,” said Shehu.
He noted that there was no one other than the two leaders in the room in which they met on Monday night.
“So, no one was there to report their conversation,” he added.
He claims that the former president wants to stay out of the public eye so as not to influence the current administration.
“He (Buhari) chose to go home in Daura hoping to find the kind of quiet he wished for himself but realizing this was not the case, visitors trooping in morning, day, and night, he moved out to a more distant place,” Shehu said.
He said that Buhari’s wish was still to be given the opportunity to get the rest he need and for the Tinubu administration to function in an environment that would enable it to fulfill the promises it made to Nigerians.
