“The Kyiv regime continues to display its bestial side. When asked about the incident, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday that they were targeting civil infrastructure and people.
The gas terminal is over 850 kilometres (530 miles) from Ukraine.
The fire was the latest in a string of alleged Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure. Last week, Kyiv claimed responsibility for two other attacks, one of which occurred in the same Leningrad region as Ust-Luga.
Both Russia and Ukraine are using explosive-laden drones to strike targets deep behind the frontlines, and their armed forces frequently claim to have shot down enemy drones over their territory.
“The defence ministry and air defence resources are taking all necessary measures to protect from such attacks,”Peskov informed reporters during a briefing call on Monday.
According to local authorities, no one was injured as a result of the Sunday morning fire, and all personnel had been evacuated.
The Kremlin also labeled Sunday’s strike on the city of Donetsk, which killed at least 27 people, as “terrorism.”
Local officials reported that artillery fire struck a crowded market in a city suburb that Russia controls and claims to have annexed.
“The special military operation will continue in order to protect our people from this danger,” Peskov said on Monday, using Moscow’s preferred language to refer to its full-fledged military offensive in Ukraine.
