The largest container ship to ever travel on Nigerian territorial waters was berthed on Sunday at the Lekki Deep Seaport.
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) revealed this in a statement, claiming that the largest container carrier’s berthing has elevated trade facilitation.
According to the NPA, the ship, named “Maersk Edirne,” has an overall length of 367 meters, a breadth of 48.2, a gross registered tonnage (GRT) of 142,131 metric tons, and a dead weight tonnage (DWT) of 147,340 metric tons.
The NPA’s highly skilled and well-equipped pilots guided the ship, which carried 3,376 tons of cargo overall, to safety.
This event confirms the promises made by Mr. Mohammed Bello Koko, the Managing Director and CEO of the Nigerian Ports Authority.

According to reports, Koko stated, “The Authority under my direction is prepared to offer the technical direction and leadership necessary to optimize the potentials inherent in our marine and blue economy.”
Koko expressed her gratitude to the Hon. Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, for his continuous support and endorsement of the Authority’s initiatives and investments in staff training and equipment replacement, which made the milestone easily attainable on Sunday.
Prior to this point, the “MV Stadelhorn” and “MSC Maureen” at the Onne Port and TinCan Island Port Complexes, respectively, were the biggest commercial ships to navigate Nigerian waters.
Consequently, the docking of a vessel at Lekki Deep, which measures 367 meters
