A Nigerian traditional king was gunned down and his wife abducted by gunmen who raided his palace, according to police, as anger over a wave of kidnappings around the country intensifies.
According to police, the assailants broke into Oba Aremu Olusegun Cole’s palace in southwest Kwara state on Thursday, shot him dead, and took his wife and another person hostage.
The state police announced that they had increased security and started an inquiry.
Similar attacks occur frequently in Nigeria, a country dealing with multiple security crises.
In the neighboring state of Ekiti, two traditional rulers were shot and killed on Monday by unidentified assailants.
When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took office last year, he made a commitment to combat instability, which included escalating intercommunal violence, criminal gangs in the northwest, and jihadists in the northeast.
