The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is playing a crucial role in transforming Nigeria’s technological landscape, driving innovation, and fostering economic growth through strategic initiatives and collaborations. NITDA’s commitment to strengthening the local tech ecosystem was evident at the recent Global Tech Africa (GTA) Conference 2024. This event, held from July 24th to 26th at the Landmark Event Center in Lagos, drew over 6,000 participants and featured more than 100 speakers, highlighting Africa’s growing interest in technology.
The GTA Conference 2024 focused on the theme “Global Collaborations, Local Transformations,” aligning perfectly with NITDA’s mission to support local tech startups and businesses. NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, emphasized the agency’s dedication to using technological innovation to diversify Nigeria’s economy. He highlighted the need to nurture local talent and create an environment where startups can succeed, essential as Nigeria strives to become a global tech leader.
The conference provided a platform to discuss vital issues and opportunities within Africa’s tech ecosystem, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence (AI), fintech, and cybersecurity. Speakers such as Kenise Hill from the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos stressed the importance of international partnerships in advancing AI and driving economic growth across Africa. These collaborations are crucial for sharing resources and expertise, ensuring that African countries can compete globally.
During the three-day event, participants engaged in lively discussions across four stages: the Epicenter Stage, Startup Stage, Outsource Factory Stage, and The Deal Room. These sessions covered a wide range of topics, including women’s empowerment, health tech, agriculture, and education technology, demonstrating how technology can address various societal challenges. The involvement of key stakeholders like Venture Garden Group, SEC Nigeria, and Deloitte showcased the collaborative approach that NITDA promotes.
A highlight of the conference was The Deal Room, where over 10 investors connected with more than 150 selected investees across 16 industries. This initiative not only gave startups valuable exposure to potential funding but also showcased NITDA’s role in linking entrepreneurs with investors. By facilitating these connections, NITDA is actively contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy, empowering startups to innovate and expand.
Additionally, the National Creativity Competition, which showcased innovative ideas from university students, demonstrated NITDA’s commitment to fostering creativity and entrepreneurship among young people. By encouraging the next generation of tech leaders, NITDA is laying the foundation for a sustainable and thriving tech ecosystem that will drive future economic growth.
