Tigist Assefa of Ethiopia broke the women’s marathon world record in Berlin on Sunday, finishing in 2hr 11min 53sec, more than two minutes faster than the previous record.
The 29-year-old Assefa bettered the record of 2hr 14min 04sec set by Kenyan Brigid Kosgei in Chicago in 2019.
Assefa went too far soon after Kenyan men’s reality record holder Eliud Kipchoge won a record-fifth Berlin long distance race.
She completed just about six minutes in front of Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui (+5:56), while Tanzanian Magdalena Shauri completed third (+6:48).
Assefa split away from the get-go in ideal circumstances in the German capital and proceeded with her staggering opportunity to turn into the principal lady to establish the worldwide best in Berlin since Japan’s Naoko Takahashi in 2001.
