The custody dispute over the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, between agents of the Department of State Services and representatives of the Nigeria Correctional Service resulted in a minor drama in the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Emefiele was charged by the Federal Ministry of Justice with illegally possessing firearms and ammunition, but after entering a “not guilty” plea, he was released on bail in the amount of N20 million with one surety.
A minor drama involving completely hooded DSS agents and NCS agents took place inside the courthouse as the defendant’s attorneys worked to fix his bail conditions. They were squabbling over who would have custody of the troubled CBN executive.
The two government agencies’ Hilux vehicles were parked close to the court’s entrance.
Dogs were also brought onto the court grounds by the jail staff.
Despite the court’s decision to allow Emefiele bail, sources claimed that the DSS is attempting to rearrest him.
