The Senate has been requested in a letter from President Bola Tinubu to screen and then confirm the new Chief of Defence Staff and service chiefs.
The request was made in a letter to Senator Godswill Akpabio, president of the Senate.
The request was in accordance with the Act establishing the Armed Forces, according to Akpabio, who read the letter during Tuesday’s Plenary.
Remember that Major General Taoreed Lagbaja was named Chief of Army Staff and Major General Christopher Musa was named Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) by President Tinubu last month.
In addition, Tinubu named Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye as the Chief of Defence Intelligence and Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla as the Chief of Naval Staff, Air Vice Marshal Hassan Abubakar as the Chief of Air Staff.
He asked the Red Chamber to act quickly on his proposal.
As there was no Standing Committee on Armed Forces, Akpabio forwarded the request to the Committee of the Whole after reading the letter that the Service Chiefs would be screened on the floor of the Senate, not at the Committee level
