The Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), Major General Christopher Musa, has firmly addressed the recent surge of rumors concerning the leadership of the Nigerian Army, emphasizing the stability and unity within the Armed Forces. His statements came after speaking directly with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who has recently been absent from public view.
In a detailed statement released by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the spokesperson for the Defense Headquarters (DHQ), it was clarified that Lt. Gen. Lagbaja is currently on a scheduled and well-earned annual leave. The clarification comes amid speculation and unfounded claims that have circulated in recent days regarding an alleged appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff.
Major General Musa underscored that there is no basis for any reports of leadership changes within the Army. The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) remain professionally managed, he stated, following the constitutionally outlined duties and protocols. He further affirmed that all service chiefs, including Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, are actively fulfilling their responsibilities as prescribed by the laws of the nation.
General Musa emphasized that Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, continues to provide regular operational updates to the COAS, following standard military procedure.
The Defense Headquarters, under the leadership of General Musa, urged the public and media to refrain from spreading false information. The CDS stressed the importance of verifying facts with the appropriate authorities before publishing or sharing news. “The Chief of Army Staff is in good health and will resume his duties promptly following the conclusion of his annual leave,” Musa confirmed, putting an end to speculative discussions.
Addressing concerns about recent calls for unconstitutional changes, General Musa reiterated the AFN’s unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s democratic values. He reaffirmed the military’s loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and stressed the Armed Forces’ dedication to their constitutional duties. The CDS acknowledged the President’s robust support for the military, crediting it for the current stability and peace enjoyed across the nation.
The Defense Headquarters did not shy away from issuing a stern warning to those advocating for undemocratic actions. General Musa declared that any individual or group attempting to destabilize the nation’s democratic structure would face decisive action. “The Armed Forces, alongside relevant security agencies, are prepared to safeguard Nigeria’s integrity and take appropriate measures to uphold democracy,” he stated.
General Musa’s statements are intended to reinforce public confidence in the stability of Nigeria’s military leadership. The CDS highlighted the AFN’s dedication to transparency, professionalism, and the nation’s progress. He assured Nigerians that the military would continue to focus on safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity, reinforcing stability, and supporting the democratic framework.
