Phobias related to cycling can stem from past incidents or concerns about safety, which are completely normal. Learning to ride a bike can be a challenging experience for many adults and children. Some individuals struggle not due to a lack of desire but because of fear, insufficient motivation, or simply not having the right environment to practice. However, with the proper guidance, even the most hesitant learners can find the enjoyment and confidence that comes with cycling.
One exceptional place to learn is the Chaingang Cycling Club in Abuja, Nigeria. Established in 2016, the Club has grown into a leading cycling school, helping over a thousand people—men, women, and children—learn to ride with confidence. They are well-known for teaching many beginners to ride within just an hour, emphasizing patience and support to help participants overcome their fears. The club offers lessons on the first Sunday of every month and has received positive feedback from participants over the years.
In addition to catering to beginners, Chaingang Cycling Club also welcomes experienced cyclists looking to enhance or showcase their skills. Each year, the club organizes events that bring together cyclists of all levels, providing a platform for both recreational and professional riders. This year, they will host the 2024 Abuja MTB Festival on November 23rd at the Apo Resettlement area in the FCT. The event will feature a range of activities, including mountain biking, running, and hiking, with over 1,000 participants expected from various regions.
For mountain biking enthusiasts, the festival will include an 18-mile race through stunning hills, perfect for those who enjoy the thrill of off-road cycling. A prize pool of 2 million naira will be shared among the top winners. Runners can participate in a 12-mile trail run along mapped paths, highlighting the beautiful landscapes around Abuja, with a total of 1 million naira in prizes for the fastest participants. Additionally, a 6-mile recreational hike is available for those who prefer a leisurely pace, allowing them to explore picturesque trails at their own speed.
This year’s festival also features a unique short sprint race with VIPs and local celebrities, adding an exciting twist for both spectators and participants. This is an event you won’t want to miss—imagine seeing your favorite stars race each other! Who will take the lead? I’m looking forward to it. The event will also offer refreshments, music, and various activities to create a lively atmosphere for everyone involved.
Whether you’re learning to ride for the first time, looking to improve your skills, or simply interested in an active day out, Chaingang Cycling Club and its annual MTB Festival provide an inviting space for all.
