Following the discovery of a popular South Korean influencer’s death in a hole outside of Phnom Penh, a prosecutor revealed on Wednesday that a Cambodian court has accused a Chinese couple with murder.
According to a Cambodian police report, the Chinese couple, who owns a medical clinic, was detained last week after the body of BJ Ahyeong was discovered.
According to a police investigation, Lai Wenshao, 30, and Cai Huijuan, 39, admitted to leaving the woman’s body behind after she had seizures and passed away on June 4 while undergoing treatment at their clinic.
According to prosecutor Plang Sophal, Lai and Cai were charged on Tuesday with “murder and torture.”
Those accused might be sentenced to life in prison if found guilty.
With more than 250,000 Instagram followers, BJ Ahyeong was an influencer for the South Korean video streaming service AfreecaTV.
Her real name was Byun Ah-yeong, and she was 33 years old, according to South Korean media.
In a social media post from March, she said that she was letting go of her influencer identity and would instead “live as a normal person for the time being.”
Lim Soo-suk, a spokeswoman for the South Korean foreign ministry, stated on Tuesday that the “unfortunate incident” was being looked into by local authorities.
The bereaved family is receiving prompt, required consular help from the foreign ministry, he claimed.
