After being kicked out of the courtroom twice for interfering with the proceedings, Darrell Brooks was given a sentence on Wednesday of life in prison without the possibility of parole for driving his SUV into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, last year, killing six people and injuring dozens more. The incident occurred in the city of Waukesha.
In announcing her sentence for the six counts of first-degree intentional homicide, Judge Jennifer Dorow stated, “This community can only be safe if you are behind bars for the rest of your life.” She also stated that the sentences would be served consecutively.
According to Dorow, Brooks was given a sentence of 17.5 years for each of 60 counts of recklessly endangering safety, which equates to 762.5 years of initial confinement and 305 years of extended supervision on top of the six life sentences.
“It needs to hold you accountable in a very real and tangible way,” the judge said, despite the fact that the sentence was “largely symbolic.”
