On Saturday night in the Rumuosi section of the East/West Road in the Obio/Akpor Local Government section of Rivers State, a toddler was crushed to death by a trailer transporting goods.
An eyewitness claimed that because of the jam, the truck driver, who was traveling at a high pace, lost control as he approached the Rumuosi junction.
When the vehicle hopped the median, collapsed on one side, and crushed the toddler as a result, the eyewitness claimed the driver was attempting to avoid striking numerous people.
He revealed that the deceased child’s mother and two additional kids had been hurt and had been sent to the hospital.
The source said, “You know this federal road always has traffic gridlock at the Rumuosi junction.
“The man (truck driver) was on speed and he could not apply the brake. So what he did because of the speed was that he climbed the walk-over (median).
“If he went straight he would have crushed all those people by the side. So he used his steering and climbed the walk-over.
“There were people too inside the walk-over, some mothers and children. So as they heard the trailer lost control and people were shouting.”
Continuing, the eyewitness who did not give his name for fear of harassment, said, “They ran to one side, but the trailer now fell on the walk-over. All the goods it carried poured out.
“From there, the trailer fell on one side hitting the mother and the children. But only the two-year-old boy died.”
He claimed that the driver instantly left the scene following the event for fear of being surrounded by locals and bystanders.
Grace Iringe-Koko, a spokeswoman for the State Police Command, verified the occurrence when contacted and noted that an investigation was continuing.
“We are aware of the incident. It is very unfortunate. We are on the trail of the driver that ran away to ensure he is arrested.
“So investigation is ongoing to that effect,” Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police, stated.
