Jiang Zemin, China’s former leader who came to power following the Tiananmen Square protests, has passed away at the age of 96.
On Wednesday, just after 12:00 local time (04:00 GMT), state media reported that he had passed away in Shanghai.
During Jiang’s reign, China experienced rapid expansion and massive opening up.
His passing comes at a time when many people in China are protesting against Covid restrictions, some of the most serious protests since Tiananmen Square.
According to BBC News, He died of multiple organ failure and leukemia, according to a statement from the Chinese Communist Party.
It added that he was recognised “as an outstanding leader with high prestige” and “a long-tested Communist fighter”.
