In a significant gesture to alleviate economic hardship, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has provided 42,000 metric tons of commodities to the Kano State government for distribution among its vulnerable populations. The delivery was facilitated by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and includes essential staples such as maize, millet, sorghum, and garri.
The presentation ceremony, held in Kano, saw NEMA Director General Zubaida Umar representing the federal government. Umar emphasized that this initiative is part of President Tinubu’s commitment to mitigating the adverse effects of the current economic challenges on the most vulnerable citizens.
The allocation to Kano State includes:
- 969 metric tons of maize
- 1,320 metric tons of sorghum
- 417 metric tons of millet
These provisions are to be distributed equitably across all local government areas within the state. Notably, 20 percent of the food supplies are designated for religious institutions, while three percent are allocated to boarding schools.
During the ceremony, Umar also issued a caution about the potential for severe flooding in 2024, referencing data from the Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, upon receiving the consignment, pledged to adhere strictly to the federal government’s directives regarding the distribution of the items. He issued a stern warning against any attempts to divert or misuse the provisions, ensuring that the commodities reach the intended beneficiaries.
Governor Yusuf expressed his profound gratitude for President Tinubu’s generosity and appealed for continued support for the people of Kano State. He assured that the state government would implement the distribution process transparently and efficiently to maximize the relief provided by these essential commodities.
