In a dramatic turn of events, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kogi State finds itself in the throes of a contentious internal conflict, leading to significant measures being taken to restore order and governance within the organization.
Recently, during an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) held on July 13th, 2024, the NMA Kogi State Branch made decisive moves amidst allegations of misconduct and constitutional violations against the sitting leadership. The EGM, chaired by Dr. Joseph Arome Iduh and Dr. Raji Adediji Idris, saw the passing of a ‘Vote of No Confidence’ against the suspended NMA Chairman, Dr. Baoku Olusola, and the remaining members of the State Officers Committee (SOC).
In response to the turmoil, the EGM mandated the formation of an interim Committee comprised of all past chairmen of the association. This interim Committee has been tasked with assuming the responsibilities of the State Officers Committee until new officers are elected at the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for August 11th, 2024.
As part of its efforts to stabilize the association, the interim Committee has taken the unprecedented step of freezing the NMA Kogi State Branch’s accounts. This measure is intended to safeguard the association’s financial integrity during this period of transition and uncertainty.
Central to the crisis are allegations of gross abuse of office and violations of the NMA constitution by the suspended Chairman and other SOC members. These allegations have been referred to the State Disciplinary Committee for thorough investigation and resolution.
Looking ahead, the interim Committee has been granted full authority to manage the association’s affairs, including executing planned activities such as medical outreaches and organizing the upcoming AGM and elections. The AGM holds promise as a pivotal moment for the NMA in Kogi State, where new leadership may be elected to steer the association through these turbulent times.
The NMA Kogi State Branch finds itself at a crossroads, grappling with internal strife that has necessitated drastic measures to ensure its continued effectiveness and credibility. The decisions made during the recent EGM reflect a commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law within the association. As stakeholders await the outcomes of investigations and prepare for the upcoming AGM, all eyes are on Kogi State to see how this medical drama will unfold.
