Lionel Messi delivered a masterclass performance, netting a hat-trick as Argentina demolished Bolivia 6-0 in their CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday. The 37-year-old star provided three clinical goals, two assists, and an array of creative plays as the reigning world champions dominated the game at Buenos Aires’ Monumental Stadium.
Messi opened the scoring in the 19th minute after Lautaro Martinez intercepted Bolivian defender Marcelo Suarez, setting up Messi to slot home. In the 43rd minute, Julian Alvarez’s brilliant pass allowed Messi to assist Martinez for Argentina’s second goal. Alvarez added a third before halftime, chipping a free kick over the top for an easy finish.
Thiago Almada scored the fourth after a pull-back from Nahuel Molina, but it was Messi’s dazzling individual effort in the 84th minute that brought the crowd to their feet. He completed his hat-trick two minutes later after a clever pass from substitute Nico Paz.
Argentina now tops the 10-team group with 22 points from 10 matches, ahead of Colombia, who also impressed with a 4-0 win over Chile.
