Kashifu Inuwa, the Director General (DG) of NITDA continues to display his dedication towards promoting technology in Nigeria through a fresh strategy that aims at creating native blockchain technology named ‘Nigerium’.
NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Abdullahi, announced a project intended to protect the nation’s data and strengthen its security. The agency acknowledged that foreign developers oversee widely used blockchain technologies such as Ethereum which could potentially jeopardize national interests.
The proposed ‘Nigerium’ blockchain will be a collaborative effort between the private and public sectors, emphasizing the importance of working together to achieve technological progress. Abdullahi stressed that this initiative will not only improve national security but also ensure the safety of citizens’ data.
The concept for this homegrown blockchain was introduced by a delegation from the University of Hertfordshire Law School, led by Chanu Kuppuswamy. This project will enable Nigeria to tailor the technology to its specific needs and align it with the country’s laws and regulations.
The delegation also raised concerns about the risks of relying on foreign-made blockchains, citing an example of how Ethereum recently made significant changes without consulting its users. This highlights the importance of developing a homegrown solution that will give Nigeria more control over key decisions regarding the blockchain.
Additionally, the delegation suggested creating a Data Embassy to function as a server located in another nation. This will guarantee continued digital access and safeguard Nigeria’s data from possible hazards such as cyber-attacks or natural calamities. It further guarantees that the country’s information remains secure and protected under any circumstances.
The delegation proposed the synchronization of blockchain technology among various government agencies to encourage seamless exchangeability and mutual reliance. Such efforts would simplify procedures while bolstering administrative efficacy in governmental operations.
Kashifu’s initiative to develop ‘Nigerium’ is a commendable step towards advancing national development and security through technology. It is crucial for countries to have control over their data and not rely on foreign technologies that may not have their best interests at heart.
NITDA’s Director-General Kashifu Halilu has launched a project that will provide Nigeria with a customized blockchain technology solution, placing the country in a leadership position within Africa. Implementing this innovative initiative is expected to enhance national security and drive economic growth while stimulating technological advances for Nigeria.
