Dr. Kashifu Abdullahi Inuwa, the Director General of NITDA, has been a driving force in propelling Nigeria’s digital economy forward. Under his leadership, NITDA has made remarkable strides in executing the Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) 1.0, successfully completing 41 out of 64 initiatives. This feat has laid a robust foundation for Nigeria’s digital future.
Despite this significant progress, Dr. Inuwa is unwavering in his commitment to push even further. The remaining 23 initiatives have been seamlessly integrated into SRAP 2.0, a new strategic roadmap and action plan aimed at positioning Nigeria as a global digital leader. This ambitious plan is in line with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS 2020-2030) and bolsters President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
One of the pivotal elements of SRAP 2.0 is talent development and digital literacy. The National Digital Literacy Framework (NDLF) sets its sights on achieving 70% digital literacy in the country by 2027. This initiative is poised to equip Nigerian citizens with the essential skills required to participate in the digital economy. Additionally, the launch of the 3 Million Tech Talents program will see 3 million tech talents trained by 2027, preparing them for global digital opportunities.
Under SRAP 2.0, NITDA also envisions establishing specialized centers within universities focused on emerging technologies such as AI, UAVs, IoT, Robotics, Blockchain, and Additive Manufacturing. These centers of excellence will serve as catalysts for research and innovation in these areas, contributing to the development of a thriving technology ecosystem in Nigeria.
Furthermore, the establishment of Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) will consolidate efforts in key technological areas, driving research financing and global partnerships. This strategic move will help attract foreign investment and foster innovation and growth in the digital sector.
To create a dependable digital environment for citizens, businesses, and investors, NITDA plans to implement critical policies such as the National Policy on Digital Public Infrastructure, National Blockchain Policy, and National Digital Literacy Framework. The formulation of regulatory frameworks for digital infrastructure, data protection, and cybersecurity will further fortify Nigeria’s digital landscape.
In terms of digital infrastructure development, NITDA aims to enhance the Nigeria Stack – the digital public infrastructure that provides seamless and inclusive access to digital services. This enhancement will bridge the digital divide and pave the way for an enabling environment for the growth of the digital economy.
Cybersecurity is also a top priority in SRAP 2.0, with initiatives such as cybersecurity capacity building and the operation of a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) by NITDA to issue digital certificates and secure electronic transactions.
Lastly, NITDA will continue to champion startups and promote innovation-driven entrepreneurship. Under SRAP 1.0, over 345 startups were supported, creating over 10,000 jobs and securing substantial funding. This unwavering support for the local tech industry will persist under SRAP 2.0, further contributing to the growth and competitiveness of Nigeria’s digital economy.
Dr. Kashifu Abdullahi Inuwa’s unwavering determination and dedication have significantly propelled Nigeria’s digital economy. With the implementation of SRAP 2.0, Nigeria is poised to emerge as a global digital leader, creating a promising future for its citizens and driving economic growth and development.
