The Ogun State Government has initiated rehabilitation work on the Laderin-Olokuta road, a vital artery leading to the Professor Wole Soyinka Train Station in the Abeokuta South local government area. This road, crucial for over 40 communities, had been in a severe state of disrepair for the past two years, causing significant disruption to socio-economic activities and hindering access to train services.
The deteriorating condition of the road had prompted numerous protests from residents, who expressed frustration over the paralyzed economic activities and the impediments to commuting caused by the poor infrastructure. Responding to these concerns, the Ogun State House of Assembly passed a resolution last month, urging immediate rehabilitation of the road to facilitate better movement for residents and commuters relying on the railway.
Initially, the state government indicated that it required permission from the minister of works to begin the reconstruction. However, in a recent update, Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Media, confirmed that the state has commenced the rehabilitation work.
“Yes, the contractors have been mobilized and they have moved into site. By this time next week we would have done a lot of work on the road,” Akinmade stated. He emphasized Governor Abiodun’s commitment to developing infrastructure across all senatorial districts and ensuring that no part of the state is marginalized. The governor has pledged to distribute development projects fairly across the 20 local government areas in Ogun State.
The commencement of the road rehabilitation project marks a significant step towards alleviating the transportation challenges faced by the communities connected by the Laderin-Olokuta road. The improved road infrastructure is expected to boost local socio-economic activities and enhance access to the Wole Soyinka Train Station, thereby promoting the overall well-being of the residents.
As the rehabilitation progresses, the residents and commuters eagerly anticipate the completion of the project, which promises to restore ease of movement and economic vibrancy to the region.
