Usman Alkali Baba, the country’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), has insisted that there is no threat to the general elections in 2023.
Security threat analysis carried out using global best practices was followed by the reassurance.
The IGP disclosed this during the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS) in the United States of America and in his meeting with Mr. Todd D. Robinson, Assistant Secretary, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, U.S. Department of States, as part of events rounding off his attendance at the event.
According to police spokesman, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi,
“In the course of the meeting, discussions centred around enhancing support for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) training and capacity-building programmes, particularly the training of tactical units deployed in the North East and other conflict theatres across the country.“
Support for police recruit training in contemporary policing topics like forensic investigations, human relations, and cyber security was also discussed as part of the ongoing election security management training that is taking place across the six geopolitical zones in preparation for the general elections in 2023.
While both leaders discussed ways to increase support for the NPF, the Assistant Secretary praised the NPF’s accomplishments and good work under the IGP’s leadership.
The IGP has constantly interacted with individuals and groups that possess the necessary ideas and support base for the accomplishment of his agenda of a modern NPF to achieve improved policing services and leave the nation with an enviable policing system.
In addition, the IGP emphasized his administration’s focus on enhanced training and retraining of police officers and men, as well as the maintenance and enhancement of cutting-edge technology for improved crime prevention, deterrence, and apprehension of suspects with evidence that is concrete, credible, and corroborated.
